Editor-in-Chief
Responsibilities:

  • Day-to-day operations of the newspaper, including finances, publication, and content.
  • Responsible for editing the newspaper for spelling, grammar, content, and style.
  • Enforcing The Argus constitution, editorial policy, and code of conduct.
  • Sitting on the LUSU Board of Directors as an ex-officio member.
  • Organizing the hiring of staff members and recruits contributors.
  • Preparing the annual budget and keeping track of expenses.
  • Handling complaints submitted regarding the operations of the newspaper or about content published within The Argus.
  • Chairing all meetings.
  • Holding a minimum of two (2) office hours per week.

 

Desired skills and characteristics:

  • Leadership, communication, management, and organizational skills.
  • Keen sense of proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and flow.
  • Familiarity with finances, budgets, and reporting.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate a staff of 11 writers, editors, and support personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing and layout out every issue of the newspaper in conjunction with the editorial staff on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinating the production and printing of every issue of The Argus.
  • Determining the production schedule for each academic year.
  • Assisting in developing the long-term vision of the newspaper.
  • Holding a minimum of two (2) office hours per week, along with participating in production meetings.

 

Desired skills and characteristics:

  • A creative eye for design and structure

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign or similar layout applications.

Business Manager
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all advertising published in The Argus.
  • Responsible for determining ad rates and the production of the rate card.
  • Maintaining expense and income accounts and reporting on the financial position of The Argus.
  • Coordinating the sale of advertising to businesses throughout Thunder Bay.
  • Assisting in the developing the long-term vision of The Argus.
  • Holding a minimum of three (2) office hours per week.

  • Ensuring that all events of concern to Lakehead University students are covered.
  • Holding a minimum of two (2) office hours per week.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for coordinating all photos, graphics, and videos published within the newspaper and in the online realm.
  • Responsible for creation of a variety of media for the newspaper.
  • Coordinating and recruiting photographers, illustrators, and cartoonists.
  • For online issues, focusing on developing interactive material and videos.
  • Editing all photos that are to be published within the newspaper.
  • Maintaining the file photo/ video archive.
  • Holding a minimum of two (2) office hours per week.

Desired skills and characteristics:

  • A keen eye for photography, including framing, lighting, lens choice, and composition.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate a small team of photographers.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with solid deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing strategies to further the reach of the newspaper through all forms of online communication.
  • Responsible for community relations through social media.
  • Responsible for developing information systems and databases for tracking performance and reporting to the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Responsible for various projects and partnerships to help change to opinion of the Argus’ brand within the university community.
  • Assisting the business team in a variety of initiatives.
  • Helping with creation and promotion of surveys about content and public desire.

  • Responsible for developing a social media strategy
  • Represent the paper’s brand on social media
  • Holding a minimum of two (2) office hours per week.
