Holiday Movies on Netflix

Old Classics and New Favourites Coming Your Way!

Well, everyone: I’ve made the grand sacrifice of watching a bunch of Netflix movies so that you don’t have to. It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times (I’m looking at you, Hubie Halloween). As a result of my many hours of hard labour, I’ve compiled a completely subjective, absolutely indisputable list of the best Christmas movies on Netflix. Enjoy!

The Grinch (2000)

Last year, just in time for the holiday season, Netflix DID ME DIRTY by taking Jim Carrey’s The Grinch off the streaming service. But this Christmas it is BACK, baby! If you haven’t seen it in a few years, give it another watch. The comedy in this movie appeals to all ages and has a great message. Dr. Suess’s reimagined classic easily takes us all back to a simpler, pre-COVID time.

Arthur Christmas (2011)

Okay, so you may not have grown up watching Arthur Christmas, but now is a good time to start! It’s a quirky, kid-friendly movie about Santa’s son, Arthur, trying to save Christmas for a little girl. Full to the brim with holiday spirit, this movie is lots of fun for the family- or just you.

Holidate (2020)

I had my doubts, Netflix! This holiday-themed rom-com got me in the Christmas mood while also appealing to older audiences with more mature content. It’s a lighthearted, fun film about two platonic friends pretending to be dating so that their family does not pester them about having a significant other during the holiday season. This is something that I think every single person in their twenties can relate to… yikes.

Shrek the Halls (2008)

How could I not include this classic? The first-ever Shrek movie took the world by storm and never stopped. We’ve seen Shrek fall in love, have a family, and chaotically disrupt the longstanding traditions of the Far-Far-Away monarchy. How couldn’t we watch him go through the holiday season? Shrek the Halls is only 28 minutes long, so why not take a little break the next time you have a chance and enjoy some shrek-tastic Christmas content.

Christmas with the Kranks (2004)

A Christmas classic! After deciding not to celebrate Christmas after years of going all-out, the Kranks’ daughter unexpectedly decides to come home for the holidays and her parents have to rush to throw together the perfect Christmas. This movie is fun, family-friendly, and hilarious to watch.

Klaus (2019)

I typically avoid new Christmas movies because I feel like you can’t beat what’s been done, but Klaus proved me wrong. This is a sweet, kid-friendly movie about a toy-maker and a postman that join forces to bring joy to children everywhere. It is a great movie filled with themes of love, kindness, and compassion during Christmas. If you’re a sucker for heartwarming tales then you’ll really like this!

You may be thinking that I forgot incredible classics such as Elf, A Christmas Carol, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, or The Polar Express. In fact, NONE of these are on Netflix (or at least not Canadian Netflix). Your best hope to enjoy these films is to have them on DVD, but you can also find some on Amazon Prime or Disney Plus, as I have concluded from my intensive research. With this all being said, remember to take breaks this holiday season! Now is your time to relax and finally step away from spending the whole day in online classes, so try your best to make the most out of it.
