What’s New: Thunder Bay

It’s out with the old and in with the new-ly renovated and repurposed spaces!

Here’s a look at some of what’s new in Thunder Bay:

Ungalli Clothing Co. is a sustainable clothing company founded by Bree and Hailey, two sisters from Thunder Bay. Their clothing and apparel are ethically made in Canada from recycled and organic materials. In August of this year, the Ungali sisters packed up their shop at 16 Cumberland St. S and moved down the street to 115 Cumberland St. N, into the former Cumberland Cinema.

A “premiere” for the new space was held on November 2nd. The main storefront is open, but they are still waiting on merchandise from a few vendors. In addition to Ungalli Co. apparel, they will also sell products from 64 vendors.

The storefront had been fully renovated, with unique features very true to Ungali, like a 100% recycled greenery wall behind their front desk! They also kept parts of the old Cinema alive; the original movie theatre numbers have been re-painted, some of the theatre chairs have been painted and reupholstered, and they even kept the original windows from the projector room, allowing you to see into the warehouse and office space (aka the old movie theatre).

The retail store is now open 12-5 pm from Tuesday to Saturday, with hours extending soon. A grand opening is expected to be sometime in December.

A few blocks away, you’ll find the new Goods & Co. Urban-Market located at 251 Red River Road. The former Eaton’s Center building - an iconic Thunder Bay department store - has undergone construction and renovation to transform into this unique urban market. Roughly 18,000 square feet of space has been remodelled to house local food and merchandise vendors, a full bar (Woodside Bar), an art gallery (Co.Lab Gallery) and so much more!

Goods & Co. market opened its doors to the public for the first time on November 6th and 7th. The market hours are Wednesday-Friday 11 am-7 pm and Saturday-Sunday 10 am-4 pm.

Co.Lab Gallery’s first exhibition opening is Friday, November 12th from 7-10pm.

After some local shopping, you may want to unwind with a walk. Why not check out the newly rebuilt Boulevard Lake Dam? For over 100 years, Boulevard Lake has been a popular park in Thunder Bay, offering various activities during all four seasons, notably on the recreational trail that follows the perimeter of the lake.

The Boulevard Lake Dam was originally built between 1901-1902 and led to the creation of the lake itself.  The dam also serves as a bridge that connects the walking path around the lake. After over a year in a half of closure for refurbishment and repair, the new and improved dam/walkway was re-opened to the public on October 30th. The rebuild was completed by PDR Contracting and Concrete Walls, a Thunder Bay company.

The new walkway is wider than the previous one and features stainless steel railings that are illuminated at night. A new seating area was created as well, with repurposed materials from the original dam.

It’s great to see local companies in Thunder Bay using existing structures for new purposes. In their own way, each company has paid homage to the history of their space while creating something new to be enjoyed in the future.
