The Bay’s Winter Bucket List

Temperatures are dropping to sub-zero. Sweater weather and shorts are days of yore. Waking up feels like one of the labours of Hercules. Yes, it’s that time of the year. Winter is just around the corner.

Although winter in Northwestern Ontario is known for being merciless, Thunder Bay is a hotspot for people looking to enjoy their winter in typical Canadian fashion. This small city has so much to offer to its residents. Thunder Bay is known by many as the Canadian Lakehead, or just Lakehead but it is also recognized as the "Curling Capital of Canada". The first thing to check off your bucket list this winter is an attempt at curling. Make sure you visit one of the three local clubs to try your hand at it. While you're there don’t forget to stop over at the Chinese joints at the clubs! Curling and Chinese food is a combination that is unique to Thunder Bay. The Port Arthur Curling Club hosts the Tbaytel Major League of Curling every Wednesday night from October through January.

For the adrenaline junkies that wish to kick it up a notch, ice climbing is an activity you'll never forget. If rock climbing seems difficult, just wait until you get on the ice routes! Outdoor Skills and Thrills Inc. is your one-stop for all things ice climbing related. They provide programmes for beginners and experienced climbers. But be warned, ice climbing is not for the weak-hearted.

If ice climbing appears too extreme for your tastes, snowboarding or skiing is a safer and equally fun alternative! Thunder Bay houses two downhill ski areas, The Mount Baldy Ski Area and the Loch Lomond Ski Area. If you wish to go skiing but lack the gear for it, multiple ski shops in town can help prepare you for a fun skiing experience. The Ski Haus located at 126 Brodie St N boasts an excellent collection of ski gear at great prices.

For over 50 years, ice racing has flourished in Ontario. Nothing can triumph over the exhilarating feeling of thrill while drifting on ice. Whether you want to put your driving skills to the test or spectate the races, The Thunder Bay Auto Sports Club is your destination. Ice racing is a power sport that is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat!

The final item on the bucket list: Canadian winter is not complete without hockey. The bay is home to many outdoor and indoor ice rinks. Gear up, hop on the ice, or head over to a Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey home game. Pack the house to show support for our upcoming champions!

Winter can be harsh but if you are prepared, you will have the time of your life. Have fun, but most importantly stay safe! For tips on how to prepare for winter, check out the “Argus Winter Survival Guide”
