Enactus Lakehead and upcoming events from Partners in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
By Alyson McKay, Entrepreneurship Coordinator and Quinn Dombroskie, Enactus Lakehead President
Need a boost on your resume? Want to become more involved and meet some cool people doing good things to help others? As one of 1,730 Enactus teams worldwide, Enactus Lakehead is dedicated to solving social issues through sustainable entrepreneurship action.
Enactus Lakehead is part of Enactus Canada, an organization which engages student leaders to create and implement community empowerment projects and business ventures in communities from coast to coast. Enactus teams across Canada have developed projects to help people gain access to clean water, electricity, sustainable food and even to reading glasses. Enactus Lakehead helps local youth by providing business knowledge, as part of its goal of setting them up for success when they launch their business ventures.
In 2016-2017, Enactus Worldwide helped 70,932 people gain access to a sustainable adequate food supply, empowered 9,015 people with a new career skill, and helped launch 586 businesses.
Currently a team of 10, Enactus Lakehead has some great ideas for success. President Quinn Dombroskie says: “the goal for this year has always been to compete in the Enactus Regional and National competitions. These events are where the best of Enactus comes together with extensive networking and recruiting with Enactus alumni and the multinational companies like Coca-Cola and Walmart.”
Currently in the works is an informational workshop series that will be held on campus. The Enactus Entrepreneur Handbook series will begin on November 7th, at 4pm in ATAC 2021. The first 45-minute workshop will discuss the Business Model Canvas: A lean business plan and an effective map to planning a business launch. More workshops will follow, and the team is always looking for student feedback and input as to what they would like to see.
All students are welcome and Enactus Lakehead is always recruiting and looking for new ideas. Dombroskie notes that, “Enactus Lakehead aims to bring students across all Lakehead faculties together with the goal to improve our community in a sustainable way.”
Enactus Lakehead is just one example of entrepreneurship on campus. The office of Partners in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE) has two upcoming events sure to entice those with an entrepreneurial spirit. Are you thinking about starting an online business and would like more information about how Shopify could help you build an online store? PIE is hosting a Shopify Guru on campus on November 13th at 4pm in ATAC 1006. This session will discuss ecommerce and how Shopify can simplify the process for you.
The Pitch It competition held November 21st at The Chantrelle can provide up to $1500 to help the launch of your business. Not sure how to pitch? All participants will be given a short information session about what a pitch looks like and how to make it effective. All business ideas are welcome. You bring the idea and we’ll help you with the pitch. All events are free to attend.
