On Friday March 9th, 2018 at 7:30pm a large and eager crowd of people gathered in Gallery 3 of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery for the Opening Reception of the Annual Lakehead University Juried Show Exhibition. Each year, students in first through fourth year in the Visual Arts program submit up to four works that they have created in the past year. The faculty then selects the best work to be showcased in the exhibition.

Before the exhibition is opened to the public, there is what the visual arts students refer to “install week.” Installation week consists of the students bringing their own work to the gallery, and also working alongside the faculty to ensure the works are placed and hung accordingly. This gives students the necessary skills needed for their future endeavors as practicing artists. Once open to the public, the exhibition draws in hundreds of people annually. Running from March 2nd to 25th, the display in both Galleries 2 and 3 provides a look into the achievements of the Visual Arts Department from the past year. The works displayed include everything from paintings to sculptures, and drawings to ceramic works. This exhibition has a broad variety, and when displayed together, creates a diverse and outstanding show.

The Opening Reception brings all the artists out of their cold, dim studios and their “hobo-esque” clothes to an environment where many are recognized for their work. With 37 awards handed out, artworks of all shapes and sizes receive acknowledgement. When entering the gallery after the reception, viewers can recognize the award winners by the gold stickers on their labels, alongside the title of the awards they have received. The Juried Show is more than just the awards that a handful of students receive—it  is one of the few times students from all year levels come together to organize their own exhibition.

Be sure to take some time out of your busy end of the semester grind to check out this fantastic show (and while you are there, be sure to take a look at the Major Studio Exhibition, which features the work of twelve Fourth Year graduating students in Gallery 1). The Major Studio Exhibition runs from March 16th – April 15th, with the Opening Reception on March 22nd at 7:30pm. Congratulations to all artists featured in these exhibitions! Hope to see you there!
