Find your fit with athletics at LU
By: Derek Patterson, Sports & Recreation Editor
Hey all you Thunderwolves! With school back in full swing many of us are once again hitting up the old gyms, pools, courts and trails to burn that school stress away. Why not make full use of what’s available to you in your own backyard and head down to your local Fieldhouse and sweat those troubles away, or simply enjoy the thrill of watching one of many varsity teams crush the competition?
Lakehead University is home to an extensive range of athletic facilities featuring: THE THUNDERDOME (i.e. full gymnasium), a 50m 8-lane Pool, cardio rooms, the Wolves Den weight room, a full turf indoor soccer field surrounded by a 200m track, an outdoor soccer field, beach volleyball court, yoga studio and change rooms complete with saunas. Access to all these facilities are included in your Student Fees and we encourage you to explore what is available to find activities that work for you! The reception desk will even loan you various equipment like basketballs to be used when the gym is open.
Have you already become bored of your usual gym/fitness routine and you want to try something new? You might be interested in joining one of our many club sports such as: Curling (M/W), the Dance Team, Hockey (F), Rugby, Soccer (M/W), Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball (M), Equestrian or even Alpine Skiing!
Or, if you are looking for some structured physical activity, maybe you want to consider the various campus-rec opportunities. These include: flag football, ultimate frisbee, basketball, volleyball, coed hockey or non-body contact coed hockey. It is too late to register for the fall semester, but worry not — registration opens again on January 7th for the winter semester.
Our varsity sports teams are always looking for your support and your voice to cheer the Wolves to victory. Most weekends, there are basketball and volleyball games in the THUNDERDOME or even the men’s hockey team at Fort William Stadium. Lakehead is also home to our wonderful track and XC teams, Nordic Ski and Wrestling teams as they compete across the country in their journeys to have Lakehead at the top of the podium.
