Keep it Clean Lakehead!

In recent news, Lakehead University has announced some exciting news regarding impactful environmental initiatives. Lakehead News states that Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced that a considerable amount of money from a $663,500 donation to support the freshwater action plan in Canada, will go to Lakehead University

Here are the specific action plans that a lump of the money will be going toward regarding Lakehead University:

  1. $230,000 for Lakehead University to restore riparian and coastal habitat for fish and wildlife in the Thunder Bay Area of Concern, as well as build features to filter stormwater before it reaches Lake Superior” (Lakehead University, 2023).

  2. $108,500 for Lakehead University to implement the Thunder Bay Area of Concern Wildlife Habitat Strategy and facilitate community engagement” (Lakehead University, 2023).

This news got me thinking about what we can do, as the student body, to contribute to this action plan.

  1. Volunteer at water protection organizations in your community or educate yourself on sustainable water solutions in Ontario! You can do that here

  2. Facilitate or participate in a community water or wetland clean-up. You can go to local beaches, lakes, or river sides and it is a great way to bond and feel connected to the environment and community.

  3. Be careful about what you put into the Earth. For example, be mindful and get rid of hazardous materials in a proper manner. If disposed of improperly, it will contaminate the water that we rely on for survival and personal enjoyment!

  4. Start a school initiative or club that promotes water protection and spreads awareness of local environmental spaces covered by water.

Let’s become leaders who strive for change in the communities we call home. Respecting the spaces we reside in begins with being active citizens in our community.
