The Lakehead Women’s Volleyball team hosted the York Lions for — LU hoped — an exciting home opener. Unfortunately, the game did not go as planned.

In a gym full of 80s themed volleyball enthusiasts, LU lost three straight sets to the Lions – 25-20, 25-14, and 25-17. The ‘Wolves made some beautiful rallies, one gaining them four points to bring the set to 21-20 before the Lions overtook them again.

The multi-coloured fans left the Thunderdome unhappy but hopeful that the women would be able to make it up at Saturday’s rematch.

The top Lakehead scorer on Friday night was Brittany MacLeod with five kills and two blocks.

“I was very disappointed in our performance,” Coach Chris Green said about Friday’s game. “I cannot spin it any other way. This is not what I expect from us. We received awesome work from our fifth year Michelle Cournoyer and our third year middle Brittany Macleod. Experience has its virtues. These ladies will have to take their prep and performance more seriously before tomorrow at 7 pm. Their competitive pride must take over.”

The Thunderwolves scored little better Saturday night, losing another three straight sets 25-16, 25-14, and 25-18.

Although they still lost, the women played better on Saturday than on Friday. They came out strong and enthusiastic, leading the first set 4-1 before mismatched errors and communication blocks brought the Lions to a 9-9 tie. The Lions went on an eight point streak and regained control of the match.

“[LU] seemed as though they would do better than last night at first. At the beginning of every set they played well and were leading for at least some of it and then they would make a bunch of mistakes and lose their lead,” spectator Kelsey Dayler said.

Lakehead’s top scorer on Saturday was Jorie Daymond with six kills, one stuff block, and one ace.

The team will host Western on Saturday and Windsor on Sunday.
