LUSU Celebrates 40 Years

This year, the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) is celebrating its 40th anniversary. LUSU, for anyone who is unaware, is a not-for-profit student union that is organized on democratic principles. Essentially, students will vote for their LUSU representatives to advocate for their needs in front of Lakehead officials. As a result of having LUSU for the last forty years, Lakehead has fostered a safer student environment wherein diversity and understanding are a top priority.

LUSU is also responsible for a majority of the services that are offered through Lakehead today, including clubs, unlimited bus passes, health and dental care, and numerous student centres. Last Thursday, LUSU celebrated their 40th anniversary, stating “For four decades, LUSU has worked on behalf of its students to advance social justice initiatives such as Indigenous rights and cultural awareness, womens safety and access to health services, protections for members of the LGBTQ2+ community, environmental sustainability and ecological justice, and increased accessibility to post-secondary education for all students.”

This Wednesday, November 24, 2021, Thunder Bay students can join LUSU in their celebrations. From 12:00-1:00 pm, students are invited to come to The Hangar for a Squid Games-inspired “Red Light, Green Light” activity. Come in attendance wearing a costume to win a prize for best-dressed!

November 22-26 will also be the week of LUSU’s annual Festivus celebrations. This will include a Festive Bingo, Mystery Gift Table, Festivus Photobooth, Guided Nature Walk, Pay it Forward Program, Holiday Movies, and more! For sign-up links, locations, and times, please visit the LUSU Thunder Bay Instagram page @LUSU_TBAY.

As for Orillia, the primarily-commuter school celebrated the LUSU 40th Anniversary last week in the Orillia Dining Hall. Students enjoyed a poutine bar, cupcakes, and photos with Lakehead’s iconic Wolfie mascot. There are no upcoming events as of yet for Orillia, but keep your eyes out for more by following the LUSU Orillia Instagram page @lusu_orillia.

Cheers to 40 more years!
