Come Skate at the Orillia Campus!
Back in December, Lakehead Orillia told students to bring their skates when returning from holiday and now we know why! Lakehead Athletics and Campus Recreation are opening a new outdoor skating rink this Monday. For hot chocolate and quality time with Wolfie, come by on January 31st at 12:00 pm to celebrate the opening!
The new ice rink is 40’ x 80’ and will be a welcome addition for those of us who are used to walking to campus from the arena. There are currently no skates available for borrowing or rental so BYOS (bring your own skates). Skaters are also welcome to bring any personal equipment such as helmets, shin pads, sticks, or pucks. Users of the rink are also welcome to use the change rooms and lockers in the Simcoe Hall washrooms during the day for storage of personal belongings.
While the rink is currently closed and the hours of operation are not yet available, the @thunderwolves or Instagram page can keep you updated. You can also click here for all up-to-date information on the new rink!
Return to this article next week for an update about the event and the rink.
UPDATE: by Emily MacDonald
The Orillia skating rink has been up and running for about a week and has been flooded and levelled. The opening brought a good crowd and students seem to love it! The rink is fun to skate on and would be good for beginners. The rules are the same as normal community rink rules so as long as you are not being too aggressive you will enjoy yourself. They also have pick-up hockey in the mornings and also 4 pm-sundown.
The rink is only open when the sun is up and is fully weather-dependent. Skates and equipment are not provided!
Outside rinks normally will only stay open till early March so if you want to skate at the Lakehead Orillia rink, you should be getting out there soon!
