The Five W’s of Getting a Booster
What is a Booster Shot?
When you have two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, you are considered fully vaccinated- congratulations! A booster shot is what we are calling the third dose and beyond. This is not because being fully vaccinated is no longer effective; it is because our bodies sometimes need a little reminder of what they’re looking for.
Why Should I Get a Booster Shot?
You should get a booster shot to ensure you have the best protection possible! While it's true that a wooden shield is fairly effective in combat, wouldn’t you want to upgrade to metal when possible? Booster shots improve immune response and, as a result, help our bodies to respond more effectively to the virus it protects against. If you catch the virus, you want to increase your survivability by as much as possible, and the booster helps you do that.
Who Can Get a Booster Shot?
Right now in Ontario, people ages 70 and older, healthcare workers, and those in high-risk populations are eligible to get the third vaccine. As of December 13th, however, Ontario will be expanding eligibility to ages 50 and older. The reason for this is not that the booster is not safe for younger age groups, but that the government wants to ensure that there are enough booster vaccines available for our most vulnerable sectors before opening up availability for everyone else.
When Can I Get a Booster Shot?
If you are younger than fifty years old, you are not yet permitted to book your booster shot in Ontario. Once you are though, be aware that it must have been at least six months since you received your second dose in order to obtain your third. Keep an eye out on the news, as the Omicron and Delta variants grow in numbers, Ontario hopes to make booster bookings available to all as soon as possible.
