Hannah Jamison, Year 1 film major

What has been your favourite part of the school year?

“My favourite part of the school year has been the formals. If you are coming to Residence, you have to go to events. They are so much fun, recurring, and versatile and a great way to meet people. The staff are very kind; they make you feel welcome. Overall, it has been a great experience.”

Why did you choose Lakehead?

“I chose Lakehead because I liked the small campus. I would go to places like TMU or York and feel overwhelmed by the populated environment and the chaos that comes with it. I like the close-knit community of Lakehead Orillia’s size; you connect with peers and your teachers a lot more. I have found my lifelong friends here, and I am very content with the relationships I have formed. People say it is not much of a party school, but you can still have fun here. I play board games with my friends almost every night.”

Claire Delodder, Year 1 Interdisciplinary studies

What has been your favourite part of the school year?

“The job opportunities. Getting a job in the dining hall is super convenient, and there is no stress about commuting. The staff were very welcoming to me, and it was easy to get along with my co-workers. Additionally, they distribute flexible hours with the consideration that we are students.”

Why did you choose Lakehead?

“I chose Lakehead because their residence rooms are spacious and adequately equipped with everything you need, such as a closet, sink, fridge, queen-sized bed, and mattress. It initially seemed surreal for a university room to be that impressive, but it is true. The single rooms are very convenient when you want to spend time alone and personalize them to your liking; however, sharing a bathroom with someone also ensures company when you need it and helps you make friends at the beginning of the school year.”

Lia Lillibet, Year 1 business major

What has been your favourite part of the school year?

“The small class sizes. It really helps you build relationships with your professors. I seriously doubt I would have gotten to know my professors or TAs if I had gone to a bigger school. Often, the communication is less formal because you have built a relationship with this person, which lessens the stress of a strict dynamic. Furthermore, they always know how to help you. You can go to them with questions about an essay; they will run through it with you and give detailed feedback. Moreover, I have found the teachers to be flexible. They recognize mental health struggles and excessive workload and accommodate you to an appropriate extent.”

Why did you choose Lakehead?

“I chose Lakehead because of its natural amenities. They have beautiful hiking trails. Moreover, the convenience of residence being close to the university alleviates the stress of commuting. It is only a three-minute walk.”
