Introducing the Nepali Student Association
Shreya Pradhan is the president and founder of the Nepali Student Association. She is also a long time friend and I was more than happy to interview her about her club goals for the academic year 2024-2025. Nestled within the scenic backdrop of Thunder Bay, Lakehead University is an ideal setting for this association, as it encourages inclusivity and collaboration. The Nepali Student Association not only aims to preserve and promote the rich traditions of Nepal but also serves as a bridge for intercultural dialogue, inviting all students to engage in a shared exploration of cultural diversity. Whether through organizing festive gatherings like Dashain and Tihar, or academic support initiatives, the association embodies the spirit of unity and friendship, making it an integral part of the Lakehead community. Furthermore, Shreya gives us insight into what joining the NSA will look like for new students:
What specific events or activities are planned for this semester?
“We are excited to host a vibrant party for our cultural festival, Tihar, akin to Diwali. Through this celebration, we aim to enrich the experiences of our Nepali students in Thunder Bay and foster a sense of belonging.”
How do you plan to engage the broader community in club activities?
“Compared to Lakehead itself, the Thunder Bay community embraces a significant Nepali population. As such, our events welcome individuals of all backgrounds and ages, inviting everyone to partake in our cultural celebrations. We encourage inclusivity and openness to all who wish to engage.”
Are there any collaborations with other clubs or organizations in the works?
“ While we currently operate independently, we remain open to potential collaborations with other cultural clubs. Partnering with diverse groups presents an incredible opportunity to create multicultural events that celebrate our unique culture and promote intercultural exchange.”
What are your goals for promoting Nepali culture and traditions this semester?
“We aspire to elevate awareness of Nepali traditions through social media, showcasing our festivals and cultural practices on our Instagram page. Our club is dedicated to building a robust community this semester, uniting Nepali students and allies through regular meetings, discussions, and engaging social events. The executive team is unwavering in their commitment to elevating Nepali culture on campus.”
How can members contribute to achieving these goals?
“By participating in our events, we believe that members' dedication and enthusiasm will contribute to the realization of our goals, fostering a deeper connection among Nepali students and the broader Lakehead and Thunder Bay community.”
All in all, The Nepali Student Association at Lakehead University serves as a diverse community. It supports members academically, socially, and culturally through events, workshops, and celebrations, fostering a sense of belonging and sharing of heritage within Lakehead University’s student population.
