Snow Day- What is Required?

(LAKEHEAD ORILLIA CAMPUS)

Is all the slipping and sliding worth attending class for? There is no question that most of us value our academics, respect our teachers greatly and attend every class when it is safe to do so. Yet, there have been some questionable days where commuting can be seen as too dangerous. It’s fair to say that some are more comfortable driving in questionable weather than others. Still, when class is not cancelled or moved to an online platform, it makes those students who would rather not drive in bad weather question whether it is worth it.

Recently, Simcoe County buses were cancelled on January 9th and January 15th. As someone who lives very close to campus, I deemed it safe to get there. Nonetheless, I had peers coming from OVER AN HOUR AWAY who stated: “I felt obligated and pressured to come because class was still moving forward as normal.”

If it is deemed unsafe for school buses to operate on the streets, why is it deemed safe enough for University students to attend class in person?

My question is, if it is deemed unsafe for school buses to operate on the streets, why is it deemed safe enough for University students to attend class in person? Overall, we are adults and can make our own decisions for our well-being. In typical Ontario winter fashion, It is expected that there will be a lot of snow. However, it is important to put your safety first and remember that missing a day of classes is not worth a risky drive.

REMEMBER: Put on those winter tires (which should have been on a long time ago), drive SLOW!, check your tire pressure often because tire pressure decreases in cold weather, and maintain adequate distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

Stay safe during the winter season Lakehead! :)
