Winter Fun at Lakehead Orillia

Does anyone else find it difficult to be active in the winter? There may be a couple of things that contribute to that feeling: 1. It gets dark at 4:30 pm (blah), 2. it has been very cloudy; lately, the sun does not enjoy making an appearance, and 3. The cold/windy weather is not enjoyable for everyone.

Even though it is cold and wet outside, there are positives about this season that can make you feel motivated and energized to take on every day. If you are worried about academic performance or falling behind because you take some time for yourself, remember that taking care of yourself reflects positively on the academic work you create. So, what exactly is there to do this winter? There is a wide range of activities to participate in that cater to every person’s individual interests.

You do not need to be a pro-athlete to engage in athletic/recreational activities! For sports fans, do you have an interest in curling? Do you want to learn something new? On January 23rd, from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm, you can learn how to curl with the Lakehead community partnered up with the Orillia Curling Club. You can register here. There is a registration fee of $20. Also, there are a couple of intramural teams you can join. The co-ed volleyball team registration is full, but you can still register for the co-ed dodgeball team here for $30- don’t miss out. If you are a gym person, the on-campus fitness room and the fitness centre at the recreation centre are always available to use. The fitness room on-campus isn’t too large, but maybe some expansion can happen in the future if an increasing demand of interest is shown *hint hint.*

If you are like me and enjoy more relaxed winter activities, you can go skating at the Thunderwolves Ice Field on campus, or you can borrow snowshoes and other winter equipment from the front desk at the residence building. You do not need to live in residence to access this equipment. Don’t be shy, and use what is available to you for a more worthwhile Lakehead Winter experience!

For more information about all these activities, make sure you follow @thunderwolvesor on instagram, where they post all the latest news about athletics and recreation on the Lakehead Orillia Campus. Have a great winter season Thunderwolves and keep safe and warm while participating in some new experiences!
