Lakehead Alumni Spotlight

Seeing our alum students doing well in their future endeavours is always encouraging. It gives us, current Lakehead students, the reassurance to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Cameron Findlay, a 2020 Lakehead graduate, tells me about his success after graduating from the Criminology program.

What were your goals when you were still enrolled at Lakehead?

Cameron: “While at Lakehead, my overarching goal was to land in the field of policing. By studying Criminology, I hoped to gain some knowledge and insight into what the world of policing may look like. Similarly, I was interested in obtaining a deeper understanding of why people choose to commit crimes, as well as how the justice system works to reduce crime and the effects crime has on those involved.”

What do you do now?

Cameron: “Now, I am working as a 911 Dispatcher for the OPP. We take calls for service from the public and dispatch our officers accordingly.”

Do you have other goals for your future?

Cameron: “My current focus is on becoming the best dispatcher I can be. I have been on the job for less than two years and still have much to learn. As for the future, I go back and forth between going on the road as an officer or staying on the civilian side. The OPP has seemingly endless opportunities, both as an officer and civilian. Eventually, I would like to get involved in forensics or as an analyst for a specialized division.”

Has your education prepared you for your career, and do you enjoy it?

Cameron: “I feel my education was sufficient in preparing me for my career. The skills and habits you build as a student will often carry over into your career. Managing my time, building relationships with my peers, thinking critically about problems and their solutions, and managing stress are all skills I learned as a student at Lakehead. I enjoy my work. It's fast-paced, stressful, exciting, and rewarding. As a 911 dispatcher, you are often the first point of contact for people involved in high-stress situations. It is an extremely important job, and I take pride in doing my part to better the community.”

The Argus hopes Cameron continues to grow and prosper in his career. It is great to see that our dedication to our education will pay off as we reach the end of our school year.

Good luck with final exams and assignments, Thunderwolves!
