Finding Comfort Over the Holidays

The holidays are coming up quickly: you can hear it in the retail stores and see it in the festive decorations all around. This has been a stressful year for everyone, but at least we are finally getting a long-awaited break from online schooling (and, sadly, not the music). This year, the holidays will look very different due to COVID-19 restrictions here in Ontario. For many students, this means they will not be able to travel home for the holidays, and for others, it will put an end to large family gatherings. Whether you find this to be excellent or terrible news, all of our holidays will have one thing in common: comfy clothes and comfort items! From budget to high end, here is a list of places where you are sure to find some great holiday comfy clothes to wear while on zoom with your people.

There are, of course, classic options like Aerie and Winners. These classic choices are great for good quality items that don’t break the bank, and they have a wide selection of comfortable clothing to choose from. However, they may be somewhat difficult to buy from at this time of year. Some of us prefer options that do not require you to order online or wait in large lines outside a mall.

Why not check out Real Canadian Superstore and Joe Fresh? Every Canadian kid has been to a Superstore and has more than likely picked up some essentials or last-minute clothing items from Joe Fresh. This brand has come a long way in terms of quality, and this year they have continued to build their selection of essential pyjama sets, singles and slippers for all ages. All items come in a variety of flannels for both men and women, with select patterns for children. Everything you need is under $40 and can be ordered online or picked up with your regular shopping. No extra hassle, no breaking the bank, just a simple add-on to make the perfect holiday gift!

Lakehead students in Orillia can also visit the beautiful boutique BALLARE, found in the little parking lot beside Mariposa. They get in new items all the time, including comfy body-suits, leggings and warm-up gear. They have an extremely cozy selection of sweaters that anyone would love! This store is geared towards dancers, though many of their items also work for daily wear.  If you’re one for at-home workouts after a turkey meal or if you’re interested in trying out yoga for the first time, this store would be perfect for you! BALLARE is a boutique though, so be warned: the prices are on the higher end (think Lululemon, but local and beautiful). Definitely worth checking out if you like to support local businesses and have a bit of extra cash to spend!

The entirety of downtown Orillia also seems to be selling those chunky knit, big blankets that you could more than likely stick your hand through. This trendy, cozy item could be the perfect buy (or make one yourself as described in our handmade gifts article!) to take your stay-at-home Christmas to the next level. Throw in some giant pillows and colourful quilts from any of the downtown shops and you have all the soft, warm items you need for a break spent lounging at home! The best thing about shopping downtown is that almost all the stores are locally-owned, with many stores featuring local artists and local works. It is also lit up with Christmas lights and trees, making downtown a beautiful and stunning place to do your Christmas shopping.

Comfy items are amazing. You can find them just about anywhere or make them yourself, and with this Christmas being so different they can be the perfect way to relax after this crazy semester. Malls may stress people out but if you love going, Tuesday mornings in Orillia are a quiet time to go, or you can shop locally or online. Take time for yourself and your mental health, find your own source of comfort and stick to it! Comfort can be found in movies, a person, an old cardigan- it all works if it works for you.
