Tips from Lakehead Teachers to Navigate the End of the Semester

We’re halfway through the semester, and it often feels like there’s a never-ending list of topics to study, papers to submit, and exams to prepare for—doesn’t it? Despite this overwhelming feeling, now is not the time to lower our guard. In fact, it’s the perfect moment to push forward, stay focused, and finish the semester strong. To help you along the way, Lakehead Teachers Bonnie McDonald and Randall Boyd share some valuable tips to master time management, tackle those looming deadlines, and boost your motivation and productivity when you’re feeling drained.

  • Stay organized.

You can't stay on track if you're not aware of the timeline. Due dates are crucial, so make sure to review the syllabus your instructor provided at the beginning of the semester. Mark the important dates on your calendar and set aside time well in advance to work on tasks progressively. By now, we all know that starting a paper the night before it's due is not the best strategy, right?

  • Divide your time into manageable intervals.

If, like many others, you find it difficult to read or write for 2-3 hours at a stretch, try setting a timer for every 30 minutes. This will allow you to switch tasks, take a short break, grab a snack, and then return to your work feeling refreshed and focused.

  • Identify the type of learner you are.

What works better for you: studying alone or with friends? Reading on your computer or from paper? Online, you’ll find many tests to help identify your learning style, allowing you to discover the most effective ways to stay productive and retain information.

  • Set up a system of rewards.

Balance your to-do list with activities you enjoy. For example, after submitting your paper, treat yourself to a movie on Netflix. Or, once you’ve completed your readings for the week, reward yourself with a delicious dessert.

  • Silence your phone during focus periods.

This simple step goes a long way in minimizing distractions. When your phone is nearby, it’s tempting to check notifications, even just out of habit. This small adjustment helps you stay fully engaged with your work, allows you to maintain your focus for longer periods, and ultimately boosts your productivity. You’ll find that without the constant interruptions, you can accomplish more in less time.

  • Take breaks to get some fresh air.

This is the perfect way to recharge during your study sessions. A quick walk outside not only gives your mind a much-needed break but also refreshes your body. The change of scenery, even if it’s just a few minutes outside, can help clear your head, reduce stress, and improve your focus when you return to your work.

Try out these tips to tackle the upcoming weeks with confidence—and make the most of the rest of the semester!
