Anishinaabemowin Nutrition Bingo

One of the most impactful classes that I’ve taken in Teacher’s College is Gakinoomagewin in Education. I had the privilege and honour to be taught by instructor Doe O’Brien-Teengs. In that class, I learned about the Indigenous experience in Canadian history, the Truth and Reconciliation Act, and how I can incorporate Indigenous values and teachings in a respectful manner in my classroom in the future. The course allowed a lot of time for personal reflection on my part, and how I can form a healing connection with the Indigenous people around me. Doe taught my class how to play the classic card game “go-fish,” but we learned how to play using the Swampy Cree language. The game is called “Mascha Na-mess.” It was a great community-building activity and playing the game made me realize that a part of truth and reconciliation is getting to know the culture, and in turn, respecting, acknowledging, and celebrating it.

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Student Health and Wellness is hosting an event called Anishinaabemowin Nutrition Bingo. The game will follow the normal rules of bingo, but the bingo card will read Anishinaabemowin words that will be called out in hopes that some people can win some tasty prizes (it is health month, so there may be some delicious healthy foods up for grabs). FREE FOOD.

The event will be taking place on March 28th, 2024 from 4:30-6:30 pm at the Maawnjigamig Where We Gather (OR1013) - Lakehead Orillia Campus

This event was previously held on March 14th, so if you were there and enjoyed it- tell your friends about it and attend as a group! If you have not yet, if you are able and interested, this event sounds like a great learning opportunity and fun experience.
